Reducing agent (AdBlue®): Replenish
  Note
To prevent the descriptions from becoming unclear, the “NOx reducing agent AUS 32” (AdBlue®) is merely called reducing agent (AdBlue®) in the following texts.
  Caution
In Blue TDI vehicles, only the reducing agent (AdBlue®) can be filled in. NEVER fill in additive which has been used in the past. It can destroy the reducing agent.
  Note
t  The following description applies to diesel vehicles with SCR process (selective catalytic reduction).
t  Additional information on SCR process and reducing agent (AdBlue ®) can be found in the glossary → Chapter
General → Chapter
Health/endangerment and cleaning → Chapter
Disposal instructions → Chapter

General
Properties
t  The reducing agent (AdBlue®) is not a diesel additive and must not be poured into the diesel fuel tank.
t  The reducing agent (AdBlue®) is used for exhaust treatment to reduce nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas of diesel powered vehicles.
t  The reducing agent (AdBlue®) reduces these nitrogen oxides to water and nitrogen.
t  The reducing agent (AdBlue®) is a high-purity 32.5% urea solution and is used in systems with exhaust treatment (SCR catalytic converters → Chapter) for diesel engines.
t  The reducing agent (AdBlue®) is legally prescribed for operating vehicles with SCR.
t  AdBlue® is a registered brand of the VDA (Verband der Automobilindustrie - German association of the automobile industry).
Use
t  Do not mix the reducing agent (AdBlue®) with additives and do not dilute it with water.
t  Do not use fluid which has already been used.
t  Only use the reducing agent (AdBlue®) in the intended, original containers. Also note the expiry date information.
t  Additionally note the reducing agent manufacturer's usage and storage instructions.
Installation location / specifications
t  “NOx reducing agent AUS 32” is the designation according to ISO 22241-1.
t  The reducing agent (AdBlue®) is contained in a separate tank in the vehicle. It is NOT therefore mixed with diesel fuel.
t  The reducing agent tank is located in the luggage compartment.
t  A refill container approved by Volkswagen must be used for replenishing the reducing agent (AdBlue®).
t  The reducing agent tank has a capacity of approx. 15 litres.
t  The part number of the 1.9-litre and 10-litre containers can be found in → ETKA.
Insufficient reducing agent
In case of reducing agent shortage, one of the following messages appears on the dash panel insert:
t  As of a remaining range of 2400 km, a gong sounds with “Top up AdBlue! Remaining range 2400 km”.
t  As of a remaining range of 1000 km, a warning buzzer sounds with “Top up AdBlue! No engine starting in 1000 km”
t  As of a remaining range of 0 km, a three-fold warning buzzer sounds with “Top up AdBlue! Engine starting no longer possible”
  Note
To make a new engine start possible, a minimum of 3 bottles containing each 1.9 litre of reducing agent (AdBlue®), must be filled in.
System malfunction or incorrect filling
  Caution
The vehicle is damaged by filling with reducing agent (AdBlue®) NOT in compliance with the standard or with other fluids.
In case of system malfunction or incorrect filling, one of the following messages appears on the dash panel insert:
t  As of a remaining range of 1050 km “Check AdBlue! Remaining range 1050 km”.
t  As of a remaining range of 1000 km, a warning buzzer sounds with “Check AdBlue! No engine starting in 1000 km”
t  As of a remaining range of 0 km, a three-fold warning buzzer sounds with “Check AdBlue! Engine starting no longer possible”
  WARNING
t  As soon as the “Check AdBlue! No engine start possible!” message is displayed and the engine is switched off; the engine cannot be started again.
t  Fault recovery → Guided fault finding
Health/endangerment and cleaning
  WARNING
t  The reducing agent (AdBlue®) may irritate the skin, eyes and respiratory organs.
t  Protect your hands.
t  In the event of skin contact with this fluid, immediately wash off with plenty of water.
t  Seek medical attention if necessary.
  Caution
At all times, ensure that no reducing agent (AdBlue®) is spilled on trim or body parts.
If this has happened, wash the reducing agent (AdBlue®) out again with clear water and a lint-free cotton cloth.
If the reducing agent (AdBlue®) has already crystallised, use warm water and a sponge.
Reducing agent residues which are not removed crystallise after a while and may damage the affected surface.
Disposal instructions
  Caution
Information reference for storage and disposal → InfoNet, Operation, Strategy and deadlines, Environment, Handbook Service Environmental Protection! Ask your importer about country-specific information on storage and disposal.
The refill container must be disposed of as per the environmental regulations.
Work preparation for filling reducing agent tank
  Note
Ensure that vehicle stays on an even ground.
The reducing agent tank's filler aperture is located under the floor covering in the luggage compartment.
  W00-10742
–  Raise floor covering -1- and push it back or hook it in.
–  Remove spare wheel -2-, if available, by unscrewing wing nut -3-.
–  Remove foam part, if fitted.
  N01-10762
–  Remove tank filler neck sealing plug -1-.

Components of filling device -VAS 6542-
1 -  Connection for reducing agent container
2 -  Union nut for reducing agent container
3 -  Cut-off tap for breather hose (cut-off tap open: Lever points in direction of hose, cut-off tap closed: Lever positioned transverse to direction of hose)
4 -  Quick release coupling on breather hose
5 -  Filling hose
6 -  Cut-off tap for filling hose (cut-off tap open: Lever points in direction of hose, cut-off tap closed: Lever positioned transverse to direction of hose)
7 -  Union nut for tank filler neck
8 -  Breather hose
  Caution
Always ensure that all hoses of filling device -VAS 6542- are not kinked or blocked. For ease of handling, the breather hose can be turned 360°.
Perform procedure and adhere to sequence as follows:
  N01-10755
t  1. Open tank cap in luggage compartment -1-.
t  2. Clean reducing agent tank filler neck using a water-soaked, lint-free cotton cloth.
3. Close cut-off taps of filling device -VAS 6542- breather and filling hoses.
  N01-10764
1 -  Reducing agent container
2 -  Adapter plate -VAG 1383 A-1-
3 -  Quick release coupling on breather hose
A -  Dimension -A- (60-80 cm) for height difference from reducing agent container to tank filler neck

The reducing agent tank is filled to maximum when the following can be recognised:
t  The container noticeably collapses.
t  The breather hose is filled with fluid.
If the container is emptied completely during the filling process and no fluid has escaped from the breather hose as yet, repeat points 3 to 8 of the work sequence.

t  12. Drain excessive fluid into a suitable container -2- for reducing agent (AdBlue®).
  Note
t  The procedure is finished when the reducing agent tank automatically has the correct fill level.
t  After replenishing, switch on ignition for at least 20 seconds, so that the replenished reducing agent (AdBlue®) can be recognised by the system.
  Caution
Excessive reducing agent (AdBlue®) must be disposed of and must not be reused.
Please note the disposal regulations: → InfoNet, Operation, Strategy and deadlines, Environment, Handbook Service Environmental Protection! Ask your importer about country-specific information on disposal.
t  12. When no further fluid flows out of breather hose, remove filling device -VAS 6542- from tank filler neck.
t  13. Clean reducing agent tank filler neck and tank sealing cap using a water-soaked, lint-free cotton cloth.
–  Remove container from adapter plate and place on the floor.
t  14. Open cut-off tap of filling hose -6- and allow remaining fluid to flow back into container.
t  15. Remove filling device -VAS 6542- from container.
Work after filling reducing agent tank
  N01-10856
–  Screw in tank cap -1- of tank filler neck until it engages.
