Radio system

General notes

CAUTION:

Before beginning repairs on the electrical system:

  • Obtain the anti-theft radio security code.
  • Switch the ignition off.
  • Disconnect the battery Ground (GND) strap.
  • After reconnecting vehicle battery, re-code and check operation of anti-theft radio. Also check operation of clock and power windows according to Repair Information and/or Owner's Manual.

NOTE:
  • Further measures after re-connecting power supply:

Refer to

  • Before troubleshooting or servicing, technicians must be familiar with the functions and operation specifics of the applicable standard or optional radio system. Always read the radio owner's manual and review all radio, tape player and CD player/changer functions.
  • For additional information

Refer to Operating instructions

  • When retrofitting, repairing or troubleshooting:

Refer to Electrical Wiring Diagrams, Troubleshooting & Component Locations, Cabriolet

Refer to Radio installation instructions

  • For detailed instructions (e.g. removing and installing trim panels):

Refer to 70 - INTERIOR TRIM

  • Wherever possible, only genuine Audi parts should be used. Only then can trouble-free installation and optimal reception be guaranteed.
  • All Audi radio systems are encoded for the instrument cluster in the convenience coding. It is not necessary to enter the code when disconnecting and reconnecting the power supply, removing and installing the same radio or removing and installing the same instrument cluster.
  • If the "Transport" message appears on display after switching on the radio, transport mode must be deactivated.

Do this using vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.

Notes for retrofitting radio:

  • The connectors on the factory installed radio wiring harness are designed for genuine Audi radios.
  • Radios with different types of connectors must be installed using adapter wires.
  • When other radio units are installed it can have an effect on the antenna amplifier, since the original Audi radio units have a remotely driven antenna (the voltage supply of the antenna amplifier is driven via a center wire of the high frequency cable). Use a remotely driven adaptor. Refer to parts catalog (vendor: Votex).

Note for retrofitting CD:

For CD preparation, the wiring harness for the CD changer is already installed in vehicle. The connecting wire can only be used with genuine Audi CD changers.

General description

Function description:

Six function buttons are integrated into the steering wheel for better operation of the radio system. In addition, the multi-function steering wheel is electrically heated (optional).

The electronics integrated in the steering wheel take over the transmission of the six function buttons to CAN-bus and dimming of the function buttons. On vehicles with automatic transmission, 2 additional buttons can be installed for Tiptronic shifting function. The electronics in the steering wheel cannot be replaced individually, the entire steering wheel must be replaced in case of a fault.

The multi-function steering wheel is part of the complete system "switch module-steering column (SMSC) and transmits its data to the Steering Column Electronic Systems Control Module -J527-.
