- Secure the hood in the wide open position (support rod in the lower hole).
- Make sure you have the anti-theft codes for the audio system and the navigation system (if equipped), then write down the audio presets.
- Relieve the fuel pressure (see
FUEL PRESSURE RELIEVING
).
- Disconnect the negative cable from the battery first, then disconnect the positive cable.
- Remove the battery.
- Remove the air cleaner assembly (see
AIR CLEANER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
).
- Remove the harness clamps (A) and harness bracket (B).

- Remove the two bolts (C), and loosen the two bolts (D) securing the battery base, then remove the battery base (E).
- Remove the battery cables (A) from the under-hood fuse/relay box, then disconnect the harness connector (B).

- Remove the two bolts (C) securing the under-hood fuse/relay box.
- Remove the harness clamp (A) and bolt (B), then remove the strut brace (C).

- Remove the quick-connect fitting cover (A), then disconnect the fuel feed hose (B) (see
FUEL LINE/QUICK-CONNECT FITTING REMOVAL
).

- Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister hose (A) and brake booster vacuum hose (B).

- Disconnect the engine control module (ECM)/ powertrain control module (PCM) connectors (A) and the main wire harness connectors (B).

- Disconnect the accelerator pedal position (APP) sensor connector (A).

- Remove the harness clamps (B) and grommet (C), then pull the engine wire harness through the bulkhead.
- M/T model: Remove the clutch slave cylinder and clutch line bracket mounting bolt (see SLAVE CYLINDER REPLACEMENT
).
- M/T model: Remove the shift cable and select cable (see TRANSMISSION REMOVAL
).
- Disconnect the air fuel ratio (A/F) sensor connector.

- Remove the drive belt (see
DRIVE BELT REPLACEMENT
).
- Remove the power steering (P/S) pump (A) and the P/S hose clamp (B) without disconnecting the P/S hoses from the pump.

- Remove the A/C compressor without disconnecting the A/C hoses.

- Remove the radiator cap.
- Raise the vehicle on the lift to full height.
- Remove the front wheels.
- Remove the splash shield (see TRANSMISSION REMOVAL
).
- Loosen the drain plug in the radiator, and drain the engine coolant, '04-05 models (see
'04-05 MODELS
), '06-08 models (see
'06-08 MODELS
).
- Drain the transmission fluid:
- Drain the engine oil, '04-05 models (see
'04-05 MODELS
), '06-08 models (see
'06-08 MODELS
).
- Disconnect the stabilizer links (see
STABILIZER LINK REPLACEMENT
).
- Remove the damper forks (see LOWER ARM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
).
- Separate the knuckles from the lower arms (see KNUCKLE/HUB REPLACEMENT
).
- Remove the driveshafts (see DRIVESHAFT REMOVAL
). Coat all precision-finished surfaces with clean engine oil. Tie plastic bags over the driveshaft ends.
- A/T model: Remove the shift cable (see SHIFT CABLE REPLACEMENT
).
- Remove exhaust pipe A.

- Remove the nuts securing the transmission lower front mount and transmission lower rear mount.

- Lower the vehicle on the lift.
- A/T model: Disconnect the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) cooler hoses (see
ATF COOLER HOSE REPLACEMENT
).
- Disconnect the upper radiator hose (A) and heater hoses (B).

- Clean any dirt off the quick connector (A), radiator, and lower radiator hose.

- Pull out the lock (B) by hand, then wiggle the quick connector, and remove it from the radiator. Do not use any tools to remove the quick connector.
- Support the engine with a jack and wood block under the oil pan. Remove the ground cable (A), then remove the upper bracket (B).

- Install the universal eyelet (07AAK-SNAA120) then attach a chain hoist to the engine/transmission as shown.

- Disconnect the vacuum hose (A) from the vacuum line. Remove the front mount stop (B) and vacuum hose clamp bracket (C), then remove the front mount bolt (D).

- Remove the rear mount stop (A), then remove the rear mount bolt (B).

- Check that the engine/transmission is completely, free of vacuum hoses, fuel and coolant hoses, and electrical wiring.
- Slowly raise the engine about 150 mm (6 in.). Check once again that all hoses and electrical connectors are disconnected from the engine/ transmission.
- Raise the engine/transmission out the vehicle.
- Remove the chain hoist from the engine/ transmission.
- Install the accessory brackets and tighten their bolts to the specified torque.

- Attach the chain hoist to the engine/transmission, then install the engine/transmission into position in the vehicle.

Reinstall the mounting bolts/support nuts in the sequence given in the following steps. Failure to follow this sequence may cause excessive noise, vibration, and reduce bushing life. |
- Tighten the front mount bolt (A), then install the front mount stop (B), vacuum hose clamp bracket (C), and vacuum hose (D).

- Remove the chain hoist from the engine/ transmission then remove the universal eyelet (07AAK-SNAA120).
- Raise the vehicle on the lift to full height.
- Tighten the nuts securing the transmission lower front mount and transmission lower rear mount.

- Install exhaust pipe A. Use new gaskets (B) and new self locking nuts (C).

- A/T model: Install the shift cable (see SHIFT CABLE REPLACEMENT
).
- Install a new set ring on the end of each driveshaft, then install the driveshafts. Make sure each ring "clicks" into place in the differential and intermediate shaft.
- Connect the suspension lower arm ball joints (see LOWER ARM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
).
- Install the damper forks (see LOWER ARM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
).
- Connect the stabilizer links (see
STABILIZER LINK REPLACEMENT
).
- Install the splash shield (see TRANSMISSION INSTALLATION
).
- Lower the vehicle on the. lift.
- Check the quick connector (A) and set ring (B) for cracks or damage. If the connector and/or set ring are cracked or damaged, replace the connector.

- Make sure the set ring is in place inside the quick connector. If the set ring is off the connector, replace the quick connector.
- Replace the O-ring (C) in the quick connector.
- Check the lock (D). If the lock is damaged or deformed, replace it. When installing the new lock to the connector, slide it straight down along the groove.
- Clean the connecting surface of the radiator (E), then apply clean engine coolant around the connecting surface.
- Push down the lock (A), then push the quick connector (B) onto the radiator until you hear it click.

- Install the air cleaner assembly (see
AIR CLEANER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
).
- Install the battery. Clean the battery posts and cable terminals, then assemble them and apply grease to prevent corrosion.
- A/T model: Move the shift lever to each gear, and verify that the A/T gear position indicator follows the transmission range switch.
- M/T model: Check that the transmission shifts into gear smoothly.
- Inspect for fuel leaks. Turn the ignition switch ON (II) (do not operate the starter) so the fuel pump runs for about 2 seconds and pressurizes the fuel line. Repeat this operation three times, then check for fuel leakage at any point in the fuel line.
- Refill the engine with engine oil, '04-05 models (see
'04-05 MODELS
), '06-08 models (see
'06-08 MODELS
).
- Refill the transmission with fluid:
- Refill the radiator with engine coolant, and bleed air from the cooling system with the heater valve open, '04-05 models (see '04-05 MODELS

).
- Do the ECM/PCM reset procedure (see
ECM/PCM RESET
).
- Do the ECM/PCM idle learn procedure (see
ECM/PCM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE

- Do the crankshaft position (CKP) pattern clear/CKP pattern learn procedure (see
CRANK (CKP) PATTERN CLEAR/CRANK (CKP) PATTERN LEARN
).
- Inspect the idle speed (see

- Inspect the ignition timing (see
IGNITION TIMING INSPECTION
).
- Enter the anti-theft codes for the audio system and the navigation system (if equipped), then enter the audio presets.
- Set the clock (on vehicles without navigation).
