Removing and installing camshaft
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331- (5...50 Nm)
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1332- (40...200 Nm)
t  Silicone adhesive sealant -D 176 501 A1-
Removing
–  Remove charge air pipes between charge air cooler/turbocharger and charge air cooler/intake connecting pipe.
–  Remove intake manifold support.
–  Remove exhaust gas recirculation connecting pipe.
–  Remove engine cover panel and cylinder head cover → Chapter.
–  Remove tandem pump → Rep. gr.20.
–  Remove camshaft drive gear → Chapter.
–  Remove rocker arm spindles → Chapter.
–  Loosen bearing caps from outside to inside, loosening bolts of last two bearing caps alternately and diagonally.
Installing
Installation is carried out in the reverse order; note the following:

t  Ensure that no valve is pressed against a piston during installation of the camshaft. Position pistons as uniformly as possible below TDC.
t  Do not interchange used bearing shells (mark).
t  When installing the camshaft, ensure proper seating of retaining lugs in bearing caps and cylinder head.
t  Before installing bearing caps, ensure that cylinder head bolt washers are inserted in the cylinder head.
t  Seal parting surfaces of outer bearing caps with silicone sealant -D 176 501 A1- → Fig.
–  Oil running surfaces of shell bearings.
–  Tighten 2 inner bearing caps alternately and diagonally.
–  Install remaining bearing caps, and tighten them.
–  Install rocker arm shaft. By hand, first tighten inner and then outer bolts evenly and diagonally. Tighten in same sequence.
–  Re-install camshaft drive gear → Chapter.
–  Install tandem pump → Rep. gr.20.
–  Install cylinder head cover and engine cover panel → Chapter.
–  Install charge air pipes between charge air cooler/turbocharger and charge air cooler/intake connecting pipe.
–  Install intake manifold support.
–  Install exhaust gas recirculation connecting pipe.
  Note
When new bucket tappets have been installed the engine must not be started for about 30 minutes. The hydraulic compensation elements must settle (otherwise valves will strike pistons).

t  → Chapter „Assembly overview - cylinder head“
