Installing auxiliary heater
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Hose clip pliers -VAS 6340-
  Note
t  When renewing, make sure you install the correct auxiliary heater version (different versions for vehicles with petrol or diesel engine) → Chapter.
t  This auxiliary heater is fitted in various vehicle models. The part number may change with each new vehicle model on which this auxiliary heater is fitted. Attention is therefore to be paid to correct assignment. Care must be taken to ensure that an old auxiliary heater version is never installed in a vehicle previously fitted with a newer version → Electronic parts catalogue.
t  With the version as of part number 4H_ XXX XXX, attention must also be paid to correct encoding for the vehicle concerned (different functions are stored in the control unit depending on the type of vehicle encoded) → "Guided Fault Finding" function of vehicle diagnostic tester.
t  A start/stop system is available as optional extra for this vehicle with certain engines. On these vehicles the circulation pump -V55- of the auxiliary heater is actuated during the stop function by the auxiliary heater control unit -J364-. By way of the data bus, the auxiliary heater control unit -J364- is requested by the air conditioner operating unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- to switch on the circulation pump -V55- → "Guided Fault Finding" function of vehicle diagnostic tester.
t  If the assignment of the auxiliary heater control unit -J364- (rating plate) differs from that displayed by the fault reader, check the display in the „Reading measured values“ function → "Guided Fault Finding" function of vehicle diagnostic tester.
t  After renewing the auxiliary heater (with auxiliary heater control unit -J364-), the Guided Fault Finding routine for the auxiliary heater must be performed („Control unit replacement“ function) → "Guided Fault Finding" function of vehicle diagnostic tester.
t  If, after renewing the auxiliary heater or the auxiliary heater control unit -J364- the entry „Incorrect control unit fitted“ is displayed, check that the auxiliary heater control unit -J364- has been encoded for the correct type of fuel (diesel or petrol) and correct if necessary → "Guided Fault Finding" function of vehicle diagnostic tester.
Install the auxiliary heater in the reverse order of removal → Chapter.
–  Fill the coolant expansion tank with coolant as far as the upper mark →Engine, mechanics; Rep. gr.19.
    
–  Butt-joint the coolant hose -D- at the auxiliary heater and secure at the marked locations with the clamp -G- using suitable pliers.
–  Place the auxiliary heater with holder in installation position and screw on the nuts -L- and -M-.
–  Carefully unfasten the hose clamps up to dia. 25 mm -3094- at the coolant hose -D- and allow coolant to flow into the auxiliary heater.
–  As soon as coolant emerges from the upper connection of the circulation pump -V55-, attach the coolant hose -C- to the auxiliary heater and secure with the clamp -B- using suitable pliers.
–  Detach both hose clamps up to 25 mm -3094-.
  Note
If the coolant circuit has been drained, the circulation pump -V55- is not to be started up until the coolant circuit has been filled, as dry running could destroy the new pump.

–  Butt-joint the fuel pipe -B- and secure it at the marked locations with a clamp of the same type -A-.

–  Place the holder of the coolant pipes in installation position and tighten the nut -K-.
–  Plug in the 2-pin connector -H- and the 6-pin connector -I-, taking care to ensure firm engagement.
–  Bleed the auxiliary heater coolant circuit → Chapter.
–  Fill the coolant expansion tank with coolant as far as the upper mark →Engine, mechanics; Rep. gr.19.
  Note
t  Following installation, check exhaust pipe, coolant hoses, fuel pipe and wiring to auxiliary heater (they must not make contact with other components).

t  If the auxiliary heater has been renewed, the year of initial commissioning for the newly installed heater is to be entered on the heater rating plate -arrow- and on the new „duplicate rating plate“ (the illustration shows a rating plate for an auxiliary heater in a vehicle with petrol engine).
t  There are different versions of the factory name plate.
–  Check the position of the air intake and the exhaust system of the auxiliary heater (air inlet and exhaust outlet must not be obstructed) → Chapter.
–  Continue with „Control unit replacement“ function in Guided Fault Finding routine for auxiliary heater. The auxiliary heater control unit -J364- is then encoded and adaption performed → "Guided Fault Finding" function of vehicle diagnostic tester.
–  With a newly installed auxiliary heater it may be necessary to release the component protection to cancel disabling of the auxiliary heater by the component protection → "Guided Fault Finding" function of vehicle diagnostic tester.
–  Check the operation of at least one remote control hand transmitter. Re-adapt all hand transmitters if necessary (adaption of remote control hand transmitters) → "Guided Fault Finding" function of vehicle diagnostic tester.
–  Start the engine and interrogate the event memory of all the control units fitted. Faults may also have been entered for other control units by way of the data bus → "Guided Fault Finding" function of vehicle diagnostic tester.
–  After renewing auxiliary heater components, switch on the auxiliary heater and allow it to run for some time (at least 10 minutes) in full load mode before handing over the vehicle to the customer. There may still be remnants of factory lubricant for example in the components and these would evaporate following initial activation as soon as the components become hot.
–  „Check CO2 content of exhaust gas“ → "Guided Fault Finding" function of vehicle diagnostic tester and → Chapter.
