ASSEMBLE
1.Tap low-reverse piston into place in case.
2.Install low-reverse clutch spring retainer assembly and retainer assembly in clutch piston.
3.Hold one-way clutch inner race in position and install attaching bolts.
4.Place transmission case on bench with front end facing downward.

5.Position parking gear thrust washer and gear on case.

NOTE: Do not restake the parking gear thrust washer.

6.Position oil collector and tubes on rear of case. Install and torque.
7.Install the output shaft and governor as an assembly.
8.Place a new gasket on rear of case. Position extension housing on case and install the attaching bolts. Torque bolts.
9.Place the case in holding fixture.
10.Coat gaskets with petroleum jelly, then place gaskets on servo cover.
11.Position servo spring on piston rod, then insert piston rod in transmission case and install intermediate servo cover. Torque cover bolts.
12.Align low-reverse clutch hub and one-way clutch with inner race at rear of case. Rotate low-reverse clutch hub clockwise while applying pressure to seat it on the inner race.
13.Install low-reverse clutch plates. Start with wave plate next to piston and follow with steel and friction plates alternately. If new composition plates are being used, soak them in clean transmission fluid for fifteen minutes before installation. Install pressure plate and snap ring. Test operation of low-reverse clutch by applying air pressure at clutch pressure apply hole in case.
14.Install reverse planet ring gear thrust washer and ring gear and hub assembly. Insert snap ring in groove in output shaft.
15.Assemble front and rear thrust washers onto reverse planet assembly. Retain them with petroleum jelly, and insert assembly into ring gear. Install snap ring in ring gear.
16.Set reverse-high clutch on bench, with front end facing down. Install thrust washer on rear end of reverse-high clutch. Retain thrust washer with petroleum jelly and insert splined end of forward clutch into open end of reverse-high clutch so that splines engage reverse-high friction plates.
17.Install thrust washer and retain it with petroleum jelly on front end of forward planet ring gear and hub. Insert ring gear into forward clutch.
18.Install thrust washer on the front end of the forward planet assembly. Retain the washer with petroleum jelly and insert the assembly into the ring gear. Install input shell and sun gear assembly.
19.Install reverse-high clutch, forward clutch, forward planet assembly, and input shell and sun gear as an assembly into transmission case.
20.Insert intermediate band into case around Reverse-high clutch drum. Install struts and tighten band, adjusting screw sufficiently to retain band.
21.Place a selective thickness bronze thrust washer on rear shoulder of stator support and retain it with petroleum jelly. If endplay was not within specification when checked prior to disassembly, replace washer with one of proper thickness.
22.Lay a new gasket on rear mounting face of front pump and position pump on transmission case, being careful not to damage 0-ring. Install six of seven mounting bolts and torque them.
23.Adjust intermediate band and install input shaft with long splined end inserted into forward clutch assembly.

24.Install a dial indicator at seventh pump mounting bolt hole, as shown in the Gear Train Endplay Inspection image and measure gear train endplay.

25.Endplay should be 0.008-0.044 inch. If not, replace selective thickness thrust washer, as shown in the Front Pump Assembly image, with one of correct thickness. Thrust washers are available in thicknesses of 0.056-0.060 inch, 0.073-0.077 inch and 0.088-0.092 inch.
26.Install control valve in case, ensure levers engage valves properly.
27.Install primary throttle valve, rod, and vacuum diaphragm in case.
28.Install oil pan with new gasket.
29.Install converter and transmission.

8.Place a new gasket on rear of case. Position extension housing on case and install the attaching bolts. Torque bolts.
9.Place the case in holding fixture.
10.Coat gaskets with petroleum jelly, then place gaskets on servo cover.
11.Position servo spring on piston rod, then insert piston rod in transmission case and install intermediate servo cover. Torque cover bolts.
12.Align low-reverse clutch hub and one-way clutch with inner race at rear of case. Rotate low-reverse clutch hub clockwise while applying pressure to seat it on the inner race.
13.Install low-reverse clutch plates. Start with wave plate next to piston and follow with steel and friction plates alternately. If new composition plates are being used, soak them in clean transmission fluid for fifteen minutes before installation. Install pressure plate and snap ring. Test operation of low-reverse clutch by applying air pressure at clutch pressure apply hole in case.
14.Install reverse planet ring gear thrust washer and ring gear and hub assembly. Insert snap ring in groove in output shaft.
15.Assemble front and rear thrust washers onto reverse planet assembly. Retain them with petroleum jelly, and insert assembly into ring gear. Install snap ring in ring gear.
16.Set reverse-high clutch on bench, with front end facing down. Install thrust washer on rear end of reverse-high clutch. Retain thrust washer with petroleum jelly and insert splined end of forward clutch into open end of reverse-high clutch so that splines engage reverse-high friction plates.
17.Install thrust washer and retain it with petroleum jelly on front end of forward planet ring gear and hub. Insert ring gear into forward clutch.
18.Install thrust washer on the front end of the forward planet assembly. Retain the washer with petroleum jelly and insert the assembly into the ring gear. Install input shell and sun gear assembly.
19.Install reverse-high clutch, forward clutch, forward planet assembly, and input shell and sun gear as an assembly into transmission case.
20.Insert intermediate band into case around Reverse-high clutch drum. Install struts and tighten band, adjusting screw sufficiently to retain band.
21.Place a selective thickness bronze thrust washer on rear shoulder of stator support and retain it with petroleum jelly. If endplay was not within specification when checked prior to disassembly, replace washer with one of proper thickness.
22.Lay a new gasket on rear mounting face of front pump and position pump on transmission case, being careful not to damage 0-ring. Install six of seven mounting bolts and torque them.
23.Adjust intermediate band and install input shaft with long splined end inserted into forward clutch assembly.

24.Install a dial indicator at seventh pump mounting bolt hole, as shown in the Gear Train Endplay Inspection image and measure gear train endplay.

25.Endplay should be 0.008-0.044 inch. If not, replace selective thickness thrust washer, as shown in the Front Pump Assembly image, with one of correct thickness. Thrust washers are available in thicknesses of 0.056-0.060 inch, 0.073-0.077 inch and 0.088-0.092 inch.
26.Install control valve in case, ensure levers engage valves properly.
27.Install primary throttle valve, rod, and vacuum diaphragm in case.
28.Install oil pan with new gasket.
29.Install converter and transmission.
