Diagnosis and repair



DISASSEMBLE
1.Remove transmission.
2.Remove torque converter and mount transmission in holding fixture.
3.Remove oil pan and valve body.

4.Attach dial indicator to front pump as shown in the Gear Train Endplay Inspection image. Install a suitable tool into extension housing to center shaft.
5.Pry gear train to the rear and at the same time press input shaft inward until it bottoms.
6.Set dial indicator at zero.
7.Pry gear train forward and note amount of gear train endplay on dial. Record endplay to facilitate assembling transmission. Remove dial indicator, and tool from extension housing.
8.Remove vacuum diaphragm rod and throttle valve from bore.
9.Slip input shaft out of front pump.

10.Unfasten and remove front pump.
11.Loosen band adjusting screw and remove two struts.

12.Rotate band 90° counterclockwise to align ends with slot in case. Then slide band off direct drive clutch drum.

13.Remove forward part of gear train as a unit.
14.Remove servo cover to transmission case attaching bolts, then remove cover, piston, spring, and gasket.
15.Remove large snap ring, securing reverse planet carrier in low-reverse clutch hub. Lift planet carrier from drum.

16.Remove snap ring, that secures reverse ring gear and hub on output shaft. Slide ring gear and hub off shaft.
17.Rotate low-reverse clutch hub in a clockwise direction and withdraw it from case.
18.Remove reverse clutch snap ring, then remove clutch discs, plates, and pressure plate from case.
19.Remove extension housing.
20.Slide output shaft from case.
21.Remove distributor sleeve, parking pawl gear, and thrust washer.
22.Remove one way clutch inner race attaching bolts from rear of case. Remove inner race and reverse clutch spring retainer assembly from inside case.

7.Pry gear train forward and note amount of gear train endplay on dial. Record endplay to facilitate assembling transmission. Remove dial indicator, and tool from extension housing.
8.Remove vacuum diaphragm rod and throttle valve from bore.
9.Slip input shaft out of front pump.

10.Unfasten and remove front pump.
11.Loosen band adjusting screw and remove two struts.

12.Rotate band 90° counterclockwise to align ends with slot in case. Then slide band off direct drive clutch drum.

13.Remove forward part of gear train as a unit.
14.Remove servo cover to transmission case attaching bolts, then remove cover, piston, spring, and gasket.
15.Remove large snap ring, securing reverse planet carrier in low-reverse clutch hub. Lift planet carrier from drum.

16.Remove snap ring, that secures reverse ring gear and hub on output shaft. Slide ring gear and hub off shaft.
17.Rotate low-reverse clutch hub in a clockwise direction and withdraw it from case.
18.Remove reverse clutch snap ring, then remove clutch discs, plates, and pressure plate from case.
19.Remove extension housing.
20.Slide output shaft from case.
21.Remove distributor sleeve, parking pawl gear, and thrust washer.
22.Remove one way clutch inner race attaching bolts from rear of case. Remove inner race and reverse clutch spring retainer assembly from inside case.

23.Remove low-reverse clutch piston from case.
