REMOVAL

Ensure that the front wheels are in the straight ahead position before performing the following procedure.
1.Disarm airbag system.
2.On models less airbag, disconnect battery ground cable, then unsnap horn cover from steering wheel by grasping the sides of the horn cover and pulling toward yourself.
3.Disconnect the horn/speed control wire harness connector from the contact assembly, then remove horn cover from steering wheel.
4.Remove steering wheel retaining bolt.
5.Install Steering Wheel Puller tool No. T67L-3600-A or equivalent, then remove steering wheel from column.
6.On models equipped with airbag, remove four airbag retaining nuts from back side of steering wheel, then lift airbag module away from steering wheel.
7.Disconnect airbag wire harness connector, then remove airbag from steering wheel. To avoid personal injury, always carry module with airbag deployment door facing away from body. Set airbag module on workbench with deployment door facing upward.
8.Install Steering Wheel Puller tool No. T67L-3600-A or equivalent, then remove steering wheel from column. Route contact assembly wire harnesses through steering wheel as wheel is lifted off shaft.
9.On all models, remove left and right lower mouldings from instrument panel by pulling up and snapping out of retainers. On right lower moulding a screw will have to be removed in order to remove moulding.
10.Remove instrument panel lower trim cover.
11.On models equipped with airbag, disconnect clockspring assembly wire harness.
12.Apply two strips of tape across contact assembly stator and rotor to prevent accidental rotation.
13.Remove three contact assembly retaining screws, then pull clockspring assembly off steering column shaft.
14.On all models, remove tilt lever by unscrewing it from column, if equipped.
15.Rotate ignition switch to the Run position, then using a 1/8 inch drift. Depress lock cylinder retaining pin through access hole in lower shroud, then remove lock cylinder.
16.Remove four lower column shroud retaining screws, then column shrouds from steering column On Bronco and F-series vehicles equipped with E4OD transmission, a protective cover (such as a rag) must be placed between the shift lever and shroud opening during shroud removal. This will prevent damage to the shift lever shrink wrap.
17.Remove six instrument panel reinforcement brace retaining bolts, then reinforcement.
18.Disconnect PRND21 cable from actuator housing by removing one screw.
19.Disconnect PRND21 cable loop from shift tube hook.
20.Remove two multi-function switch retaining screws, then disconnect electrical connectors from switch.
21.Remove multi-function switch from column.
22.Remove pinch bolt from steering shaft flex coupling.
23.Disconnect shift cable from selector lever pivot.
24.Remove shift cable from shift cable bracket by pushing tab on cable in and sliding cable off bracket.
25.Disconnect ignition switch wiring by loosening bolt and removing connector. Bolt is part of connector and is not removable.
26.While supporting column assembly, remove four column assembly retaining nuts.
27.Disconnect collapsible intermediate shaft from U-joint at lower end of steering column, then remove steering column from vehicle.

INSTALLATION

1.Align column lower universal joint to lower shaft, then install one bolt. Torque retaining bolt to 30-42 ft. lbs.
2.Support column assembly to column support bracket, then install four retaining nuts and torque to 10-14 ft. lbs.
3.Install shift cable on shift cable bracket, then snap shift cable onto selector pivot ball.
4.Connect two multi-function switch electrical connectors, then position switch on column. Torque retaining screws to 1.5-2.2 ft. lbs.
5.Connect all electrical connectors.
6.Connect PRND21 cable loop on shift selector hook, then install PRND21 cable bracket to actuator housing. Torque retaining screw to 5-8 ft. lbs.
7.Install instrument panel reinforcement brace, then five brace retaining bolts.
8.Install upper and lower column shrouds, then lower instrument panel cover. On right lower moulding installation, a screw will also have to be installed. On F-series and Bronco vehicles equipped with E4OD transmission, a protective cover (such as a rag) must be placed between the shift lever and shroud opening during shroud installation. This will prevent damage to the shift lever shrink wrap.
9.Install lock cylinder assembly, then tilt lever, if equipped.
10.Install airbag clockspring contact assembly. Torque retaining screws to 1.5-2.2 ft. lbs.
11.Install steering wheel onto column shaft. Install a new bolt and torque to 23-33 ft. lbs.
12.On vehicles less airbag, position horn cover to steering wheel and snap into place, then connect battery ground cable.
13.On models equipped with airbag, position airbag module to steering wheel. Install four retaining nuts and torque to 3-4 ft. lbs.
14.Reactivate airbag system.
15.Verify airbag warning indicator, then drive vehicle for 10 miles to establish adaptive strategy.
