Diagnosis and repair

-Use the information about the vehicle driveability or emission concern (from the service write-up, Customer Information Worksheet, etc.) to attempt to verify/recreate the symptom. If the symptom is intermittent, continue through the Diagnostic Routines (Diagnosis by Symptom) flowcharts procedure to help identify an area of concern. Also refer to the additional "Diagnosing Intermittents" information.

-Refer to Diagnostic Routines Index and select symptom that best describes vehicle symptom (for multiple symptoms, select one that is most noticeable).

-Go to Diagnostic Routines (Diagnosis by Symptom) flowchart indicated in the Diagnostic Routines Index.

-Begin flowchart at "START".

-Perform all preliminary checks.

-Go to next flowchart sequence. Follow the instructions in that sequence.

If the sequence contains a test step or question (without a reference outside the sequence), perform the test step, answer the question and continue as directed.

If the sequence sends you to a specific area for testing (except Diagnostic Subroutines), go to the procedures. Follow the directions given in those procedures, including directions to other tests, sections, etc. If a damaged part is found, service or replace as directed. If no fault is found, and diagnosis in that area is complete, return to the Diagnostic Routines (Diagnosis by Symptom) flowchart and continue with the next sequence.

-During diagnosis, if directed to test a system and/or component that is not contained on that vehicle, proceed to the next step or flowchart sequence.

-The Diagnostic Routines (Diagnosis by Symptom) Flowcharts must be followed in order until the star (*) is encountered. Although the flowchart sequences after the star are arranged in order of probability, ease of accomplishment and accessibility, the technician is not required to adhere to the order from that point due to variation in vehicle type, vehicle repair history or technician experience.

-If the Diagnostic Routines (Diagnosis by Symptom) Flowchart for the vehicle symptom is completed and no problem is found, return to the Diagnostic Routines Index to address the next most prominent symptom. If all diagnosis is complete and no problem is found, it may be helpful to go to Computers and Control Systems , Pinpoint Test Step Z1 for further diagnosis.
